Penguins are a family of 17 to 19 species of birds that live primarily in the southern hemisphere they include the tiny blue penguins of australia and new zealand the majestic emperor penguins of antarctica and king penguins found on many sub antarctic islands the endangered african penguin and the galpagos penguin the only penguin to be found north of the equator. This loss of habitat primarily due to climate change has brought about a severe decline in penguin population in the wild as a result of which several species of this flightless bird have been included in the endangered animals list compiled by the international union for conservation of nature iucn today. In some regions penguin habitats are being altered by the construction of roads bridges and other types of buildings reducing the natural space to which they are adapted to live unrest tourism and even ecotourism are dangerous for unwary penguins. The african penguin is known as a pursuit diver as it hunts for fish crustaceans and small squid for the most part they live along the shoreline of africa but mostly on the small islands that are off the coast of south african and namibia which are called the penguin islands. The eudyptes moseleyi is an endangered penguin species whose population has declined by about 90 since the 1950sthe species has a highly restricted range over 99 of the population of northern rockhoppers breed on two islands the gough and the tristan da cunha in the south atlantic ocean
